Abstract :

The incidence of gout in Indonesia is 4.9%, which is considered low, but gout is quite affecting patience’sactivities, so appropriate treatment will be needed. Gout can be treated using not only by modern medicine, butalso by natural ingredients, such as bay (Syzygium polyanthum) leaves, soursop (Anona muricata) leaves, noni(Morinda citrifolia), and sambiloto (Andrographis paniculata) leaves. This traditional treatments are consideredsafer because of the minimum side effects. The purpose of this study was to determine the knowledge andexperience of the community regarding traditional medicines used for the treatment of gout. In this study, asurvey was conducted using a questionnaire to 119 respondents with the criteria of women aged 35-65 years inone of the sub-district in Surabaya. From the survey results, it was found that the knowledge of housewivesabout traditional medicine is included in the good category (94%) but public knowledge of the types of plantsthat can be used as traditional medicine for gout were still low (52%). Most housewives (62%) use plants for thetreatment of gout by boiling the plants and most people (57,69%) use traditional medicine when they were sick.It can be concluded that the knowledge of traditional medicine is good in general. However, people still lack ofunderstanding about plants used for gout treatment
