Abstract :

According to Food & Drug Administration (FDA), cosmetics is a product applied to the skin intended forcleansing or improving its appearance. Cosmetics distribution in the population should be monitored due to therise of harmful chemicals in cosmetics. This study was aimed to investigate knowledge of women about the safecosmetics and harmful chemicals in cosmetics, the proportion of those who used safe cosmetics. A survey wasconducted to 120 purposively selected women in Mojo Sub-District in Surabaya City who were married and usecosmetics in daily life. The results showed that the majority of respondents had poor knowledge about safecosmetics and harmful chemicals. About 13% of respondents were found using harmful cosmetics. Thus, acommunity education program is needed to improve knowledge about safe cosmetics which are free fromharmful chemicals.
