Abstract :

Antibiotics is one of the drugs that are commonly used. However, the inappropriate use of antibiotics still remain be a problem in Indonesia. This study aimed to see the profile of antibiotic use and knowledge of antibiotic among women (mothers) in Airlangga Sub-district, Gubeng District, Surabaya. This study was a cross-sectional, using accidental sampling method. The result showed that 66% of the antibiotics was used in improper indication, 52% were obtained without prescriptions, 3% were obtained from incorrect places. About antibiotics usage, there was 25% of incorrect dosage, 91% of inappropriate frequency, 37% of improper storage, and 40% of disobedient of the schedule of taking antibiotics. While the result of knowledge level showed that 14 respondents (14%) had low knowledge, 66 respondents (66%) had enough knowledge, and 20 respondents (20%) had high knowledge about antibiotics. Thus, improvement of knowledge about antibiotics still need to be conducted by enhancing the role of pharmacist to educate the society about antibiotics.
