Abstract :
This paper deals with the ongoing use of local vernacular spoken in the city of Semarang. It tries to prove that there is a serious sociocultural change in the city accelerated by novel high rise buildings, high tech applications in public places and new constructions of spatial landscapes. The sociocultural change seriously influences the current use of the Javanese vernacular, which is the native tongue of the city dwellers. Since the vernacular is highly embedded in the sociocultural tradition of its speakers, its popularity will be in jeopardy if the speakers' sociocultural tradition changes tre-mendously due to the rapid growth of urbanization and advanced technology. The logic of the Javanese vernacular, which is traditional, does not match with the practice of urban life style, which is hectic, efficient and modern. In public domains, when interacting with unknown interculators, most Javanese prefer to speak Bahasa Indonesia rather than their own native tongue. This paper will argue which variety of the vernacular will linger on when the current waves of urbanization come into the private entrenchment of Javanese lives.
