Abstract :

Maturation occurred in various age groups depending on the kind of species.  Most of animals, including human, become sexually mature after they attained adult size. Boys and girls reach the end of physical growth at a different timing. The variation in the attainment of maximum body height is found in various world populations. The aim of this study was to identify the differences in anthropometric measurements between boys and girls in 6-19 years of age. The sample—1151 males and 1855 females—came from mid- to high socio-economic status. The variables were height, weight, shoulder breadth, hip breadth, biceps and triceps skinfold thicknesses, arm and chest circumferences. ANOVA was used for identifying the significance of the difference between the males and females anthropometric measurement averages in each age group. The difference between males and females seemed to be started earlier than 6 years of age. Sexual dimorphism caused by sexual hormons was most obvious in height, skinfold thicknesses, and shoulder breadth. Significant differences in shoulder breadth and skinfold thicknesses started at age 13 years, while significant difference in height started in 14 years of age. It was believed that the sexual hormons had caused the effects earlier than the age of 13 years, until finally they caused the significant differences around 13 years of age.
