Abstract :
ABSTRACT Background : The sugar industry has the potential to provide ash exposure to workers. This prompted researchers to determine the extent of burning bagasse ash affects the physiology of ventilation and TNF-α levels of its workers. Methods : The research was conducted in the sugar mills located in Tulungagung Modjopanggoong East Java, Indonesia. By taking a sample of 64 people, consisting of 32 employees as a group are exposed to the production and 32 administrative employees as a control group. Respondents of the production workers, aged 20-55 years old. Results : There were no differences in pulmonary ventilation function (FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC ratio) a significant association between the workers of the production and administration. Obtained incidence of abnormalities of restriction, obstruction and mix in the production workers. Pulmonary function abnormalities obtained on the production of the sugar factory workers Modjopanggong about 12.5%. There were no differences in the levels of TNF-α are significant in the production and administrative workers. Conclusion : Burning bagasse ash exposure did not cause abnormalities in pulmonary ventilation function and TNF-α levels of sugar factory workers.
