Abstract :

Kata kunci: Afrika, imajinasi Tionghoa, ras, representasi, stereotipAbstractThis essay is a preliminary research in the pursuit of a more ambitious project that aims to assess the implications of the emergence of an African community in southern China. This paper explores how historical and popular perceptions of Africa and Africans in the Chinese imagination inform certain prejudices that mark the experiences of African migrants within the borders of the People’s Republic of China. The analysis of the cultural, historical, political and economic issues surrounding this study will provide better understanding of Sino-African cultural exchanges in general and work as a tool to suggest that other types of analysis (away from the traditional ones simply based on the interactions amongst nation-states) are needed to make sense of these new patterns of migration (“from south to  south”  nations  and/or  civilisations).  Framed  as  exploratory  research,  the  study  analyses  the discourses of Africans in Chinese media, in the form of texts such as online forum discussions, news coverage, and other secondary data. This preliminary research found that the popular representations of Africans in China have encouraged an attitude reinforcing the discredited notion of “an African culture” and providing a safe haven for a plethora of negative stereotypes. It is further suggested that these stereotypes have to be challenged and eventually demystified. In addition, the diasporic identities that are being created in China also challenge the traditional canon that the immigrants do not live the experience of adapting to a Western or First World country/culture. Further studies on diaspora and migration are strongly suggested. Keywords: Africans, Chinese imagination, race, representation, stereotype
