Abstract :

Kata kunci: estetika, identitas hibrida, life history, pakaian, subjektivitasAbstractAesthetics and taste are different concepts but in many ways they are interconnected. In a philosophical sense, the concept of aesthetics is closely associated with a value judgement in art that is set apart from everyday activity. The study focuses on examining the concept of social and cultural significance of aesthetic taste reflected in everyday fashion, rather than the fashion system per se which has its own complex structure and deserves a study of its own. Drawing on the researcher’s and her mother’s life  stories  as  data,  this  study  adopted  life  history  approach  to  offer  accentuated  individuality  in viewing aesthetics—a perception of beauty which is usually shared in a certain community—and thus would offer an insight that aesthetics is actually a deep personal experience. The study found that the social or cultural significance of everyday aesthetic values vary from one person to another since people experience life differently. Finally, the study is expected to offer a better understanding of taste for those people who do not easily fit into any apparent group or cultural category, or those having hybrid identity. Rather than imposing one’s own judgement on others by dismissing them at first glance, consequently resulting in exclusion and discrimination, one should be more emphatic and embrace an open-minded approach to aesthetics as well as taste. Keywords: aesthetics, clothing, hybrid identity, life history, subjectivity
