Abstract :

Kata kunci : DBL, identitas, Jawa Pos, power-bloc, soft newsAbstractAs with other cultural products, sports can not be separated from the contestation of meaning between producers and consumers. The contestation appeared in the coverage of DBL (Development Basketball League)  in  Jawa  Pos.  DBL  is  discussed  in Sportainment supplement  in  Jawa  Pos  that  specifically discusses the sport and sport lifestyle. This study focuses on DBL (Development Basketball League), which  is  initiated  by  the  Jawa  Pos  Group  and  is  the  largest  high  school  basketball  competition in  Indonesia.  More  specifically,  the  study  sought  to  analize  how  Jawa  Pos  describe  and  signify Development Basketball League (DBL) as a popular sport. The method used is a qualitative method and data were news about DBL in Jawa Pos from March to June 2013. The results of analysis show that the hegemony of DBL in Jawa Pos appears on the writing pattern focusing on storytelling style and has more emphasis on “soft news” rather than “hard news”. The writing pattern makes Jawa Pos a power-bloc which cemented basketball as a popular sport in Indonesia, especially among teenagers. It makes DBL as one identity marker for adolescents, taking DBL as one of the products of popular culture. Keywords: DBL, identity, Jawa Pos, power-bloc, soft news.
