Abstract :
Children with mental retardation show fine and gross motor development delayed, they have lower skills than normal children. Developmental disorder that primarily occurs, marked by speed, flexibility, and motor coordination are not optimal. The objective of this research was to analyze the effect of paper toys therapy to the motor development of mentally retarded children. This research used quasy experimental study. The population were 36 children with mentally retarded at “SLB Negeri Cerme” and the respondents were recruited 16 samples based on inclusion criteria and divided into treatment and control groups. Data was analyzed with the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and Mann Whitney U Test with significance level α<0,05. The result of this study showed that fine motor skill (ρ=0,035) in treatment group, while in control group (ρ=0,068), and gross motor skill (ρ=0,011) in treatment group, while in control group (ρ=0,180). The result of Mann Whitney U Test on fine motor skill (ρ=0,031) and gross motor skill (ρ=0,045). Paper toys therapy could increase children’s fine and gross motor skills of mental retardation because this therapy is useful to train minor and major muscle, such to train their finger muscle, to coordinate their muscle eyes, hand and feet muscle in order to generate functioned as a proportional movement. It can be concluded that paper toys therapy had an effect on the development of children’s fine and gross motor skills of mental retardation. The further research should focus on motor skills stimulation for moderate of mentally retarded children.
