Abstract :
Since 27th July, 1996 riots, several mass riots with physical violence happened throughout the country. As recorded, social and political violence was fluctuated. Its intensity was increased before and during Soeharto’s step down, 1997 general elections, polling in East Timor, 1999 general elections as well as before and during the changing of Abdurrahman Wahid’s administration. History witnessed, social and political violence in the last eight years was extremely huge in quantity, intensity and in the number of victims. Latest studies on social and political conflicts with physical violence usually being understood within the context of transitional theories and democracy consolidation. The latest seems to be the most possible theoretical framework to describe social and political violence phenomena in Indonesia.
