Abstract :

This paper is to demonstrate that for community building, nasionalism and nasional building the statenecessarily needs to incorporate assets and social capital of the people. In this paper, I focus on ritual practiceas the asset and social capital of Ammatoans, one of marginalized indigenous peoples of South Sulawesi. Dataof this paper were gathered through a fieldwork conducted in May-September 2012 through which I deployedparticipant observation and unstructured interviews. The research focused on ritual practice and how itfunctions to everyday life of Ammatoans. I observed that ritual is the “heart” of Ammatoans’ everyday practice, including socio-politics, agriculture, religion, and economy. This paper, however, discusses ritual economypractice as Ammatoans’ local wisdom that has persisted and transformed throughout history. I show that thereason why the government or the state has failed in building and empowering the people, communities, especially their economic life, has been because they have ignored the “heart” of the peoples’ everydaypractice: local wisdom. This paper shows that ritual economy as Ammatoans’ local wisdom on economic systemhas the potential for the community development. It then concludes that local wisdom must be incorporated forthe planning, conceptualization, strategies, actions for community building, nationalism, and nationaldevelopment because it is the asset and the social capital of the people.
