Abstract :

The aim of this study was to evaluate solid waste management at Hajj General Hospital of Surabaya by comparing its activities to the procedure.This study was designed as an observational descriptive study by using questionnaire and observation forms to measure and observe management performance of solid medical and non-medical wastes at Hajj General Hospital of Surabaya. The results showed that medical and non-medical wastes were mixed because of lack of knowledge and discipline on waste management of waste collection workers and paramedics as well. Furthermore, except for maskers and rubber gloves, facilities to manage solid wastes were sufficient enough to support solid waste management. Moreover, the incinerator could not burn wastes perfectly since its temperature remained below 1000oC leaving bad residu and produced air pollution.It is concluded that implementation of procedure on solid waste management at Hajj General Hospital of Surabaya is not satisfied enough. It is suggested to increase availability of the facilities i.e. to improve personal protective equipment and incinerator perfor-mance; and also workers’ knowledge on procedure and process of solid wastes collection and refusal by conducting training and tight supervising.
