Abstract :
Kitab Kuning (yellow book) is an integral part of educational system in pondok pesantren. A santri (student of pondok pesantren) learn about their religion and interpretation of it from this book. The problem is not about Islam as religion, but in interpretation of Islam written by Islamic scholars in Kitab Kuning. This research explores the opinion from santri in two pondok pesantren, which are Pondok Pesantren Attaqwa Putra and Pondok Pesantren Attaqwa Putri, located in Ujungharapan, Babelan, regency of Bekasi. Using qualitative methods, this research explores and explains the opinion about gender issues in Kitab Kuning, especially in discourse about rights and obligations between husband and wife. This research shown that the opinion from santri (male and female) about this issue can be so different. The male santri tend to be more conservative (scriptural) while female santri tend to be more moderate (contextual) in answering the questions about the gender issues in marriage written in Kitab Kuning.
