Tourism development and community participation (case study in bromo mountain)

Abstract :

The objective of this research is to see how far local community is being involved in the development of a tourism object. Data are collected by interviewing 5 informants and 50 randomly sampled respondents. The conclusion is that participation of the local community in the development of Bromo tourism area is quite positive although there are few shortcomings, such as low quality products, lack of privacy for group tourists, unprofessional management of homestays, unskilled human resources and limited funds. Development of tourism that involves local people as an important aspect/partner not only provides economical advantages for the community but also preserves the perpetuity of the tourism object and minimize negative impact that may arise from the development.
