Abstract :

The ethanolic extract of Cassia alata Linn leaves has been known having great activity against genre fungus including Candida albicans; it’s one of the funguses that mostly cause stomatitis aphtuosa recurrent. Mucoadhesive gel mostly use as bases of stomatitis aphtuosa recurrent medicine. The aims of these study is to determine the effect of mucoadhesive gel (1% Carbomer ETD 2020 gel base and in 5% CMC Na gel base) on Cassia Alata Linn leaves ethanolic extract (3.55 – 25% w/w in the gels) against Candida albicans, compared with Nystatin (3.33% w/w) in the same bases. The physical characteristics of all formulas were investigated included the organoleptic character, pH, and mucoadhesiveness. In vitro inhibition effects on Candida albicans growth were determined by diffusion method. The data were analysed statistically by ANOVA-one way. The result showed that ethanolic extract Cassia alata Linn leaves decreased both pH value and mucoadhesiveness of gel bases. The ethanolic extract Cassia alata Linn leaves in concentrations 80, 120 and 160 mg/mL (8, 12, and 16%) are effective as antimicrobial against candida albicans. But if it formulated in 1% Carbomer ETD 2020 or 5% CMC Na gel bases have lost its efficacy against Candida albicans.
