Abstract :
Abstract Javanese and Papuan were two populations that had different gene pool. Biologically, characteristics that distinguished Javanese and Papuan population were the hair shape and colour, nose shape, the colour of the iris and the location of the eye slit. One of biological characteristics that were possessed by humans being was fingerprint. Genetic factor played a role in the formation of fingerprint pattern. Generally, the fingerprint consisted three patterns, namely loop, arch, and whorl. In this study, intended to find out the fingerprint patterns in Javanese and Papuan samples. The statement of the problem was whether there was a significant difference in the fingerprint pattern between the sample from Javanese and Papuan. This research applied non-parametric statistical quantitative methods with chi-square calculation technique. The chi-square was carried out by using SPSS 17 program. Furthermore, the sampling technique used purposive sampling. Sample was consisting of 70 samples from Javanese and 70 samples from Papuan. Overall, from the pattern that was contained in the ten fingers (phalanx distal), Javanese samples were more prevalent in the loop pattern with a percentage of 52.1%, whorl pattern at 41.6%, then followed by arch pattern at 6.3%. Meanwhile, Papuan samples were dominated by whorl pattern at 51.6%, loop pattern at 46.9%, arch pattern at 1.6%. It appeared there was a significant differences in the fingerprint patterns Javanese and Papuan samples. Keywords: Fingerprint, population, Javanese, Papuan.
