Abstract :

ABSTRACT In welding process, toxic gases, fumes, and particles is released into the working environment. Either nitrogen dioxide, ozone, or several fumes and particles have a characteristic of oxidant or free radicals, producing various types of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and Reactive Nitrogen Species (RNS). The exposure of various hazardous materials that produce various types of ROS and RNS may affect lung function acutely. ROS and RNS effects on respiratory system may directly damage the alveolar epithelium or the stimulation of inf lammatory process. Vitamin C is an antioxidant most commonly present on surface fluid of the respiratory tract and it is important in the protection against damages resulting either from chemical substances or free radicals. The objective of this study was to find the effect of vitamin C administration as antioxidant on the acute changes of lung function among welders in South Denpasar. This was a field experimental study using the randomized pre test-post test control group design. This study revealed that after intervention, there was significant difference in the lung function (FVC and %FVC) before and after vitamin C administration (p < 0,05), in which treatment group showed increase of FVC and %FVC, while control group showed decrease of FVC and %FVC. In conclusion, the administration of vitamin C can prevent acute reduction of lung function (FVC and %FVC) in welders. Keywords: lung function (FEV1, FVC, %FEV1, %FVC), vitamin C, free radical
