Abstract :
In vitro antiviral activity of Eucalyptus globulus stem against Hepatitis C Virus has been done. Previous studies showed that 80% ethanol extract of Eucalyptus globulus stems has potential activity as an antihepatitis C virus against J6/JFH1 with IC50 value of 43.0 µg /ml. The aim of this study was to determine the anti-hepatitis C activity of extract and fractions of Eucalyptus globulus stems against 2a strain of JFH1a hepatitis virus. The 80% ethanol extract and dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, butanol and water fraction were tested for their antiHCV activity. The results showed that the ethanol extract of Eucalytus globulus stems, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and butanol fraction have activity in inhibiting the viral infection of cells with IC50 value of 10.19 µg/ml; 1.64 µg/mL; 10.49 µg/mL; and 18.78 µg/mL respectively. The water fraction was not active with IC50 value of 205.79 µg/ml. Phytochemical screening using thin layer chromatography shown that the active fractions contained compounds known as terpenoids and flavonoids. Further studies of compounds that have anti-hepatitis C activity are needed.
