Abstract :
Before the era of Japanese army occupation, Wonokromo region was the area of the Dutch East Indies Government’s defense of the south. Wonokromo was also the central region of Sidoarjoberder with Wonokromo which gradually turned into Surabaya metropolitan city. Problems studied in this research is the populace in Wonokromo region from 1942-1948. Within this period Indonesian people suffered the Japanese army occupation up to the era of Indonesian independence day. The research method applied in this writing is historical method, heuristic, source criticism and historiography. The result of this research shows that the villages participated in protecting their villages from damages. They did not want their villages ruined. From time to time Wonokromo region serves a base activator political issues since the Dutch Indies Government. In East Java, Wonokromo region was considered to be the main defense. At that time Sidoarjo was the second defense, and Porong was the third defense for the Dutch Government. Among the three defenses, Porong was the most unpenetrable. If the Dai Nippon army had successfully landed in Surabaya and they penetrated into Wonokromo region which was considered to be the most unpenetrable defense, then they penetrated into Sidoarjo which was considered to be the second defense. Wonokromo has had social psychology history and cultural urban monumental character.
