Abstract :

This erticel describes a catholic school institution founded by the Ursuline misionaris. This article takes temporal boundaries from 1950 to 1976 describes the development of private schools. Role Santa Maria in education began from 1922, which aims to educate women and spread the religious mission. In development, this institution experienced many ups and downs, from the colonial to the government of the Republic of Indonesia. In the post-independence proclamation of Indonesia, the existence of the sisters to his work in education began in 1950. Ursuline school institutions be developed after following government regulations. This schools underwent name change from Girls School into Santa Maria School. The changes are characterized by the presence of boys. This study uses historical method, using primary sources photographs, government and Santa Maria school archives. The results showed that in the development of educational institutions that have established the Ursuline Sisters have progress-oriented from colonial Dutch East Indies to Indonesian nationalism. So schools are shaped by the sisters also influence the educational history of the people of Surabaya.
