Abstract :
The background of this study is the low utilization of maternity room (averaging 31.38%) by pregnant mothers compared to new visitation of pregnant mothers at the maternity clinic of Dr. Wahidin Sudiro Husodo General Hospital (DWSH-GH) in Mojokerto City from the year 2000 to 2004. The objective of this study is to set an effort to increase bed-utilization of the maternity room of DWSH-GH based on personnel’s assessment on their needs fulfillment, the assessment of pregnant mothers on their rights, pregnant mothers’ perception on the maternity in-patient ward, mothers’ assessment and expectation on maternity in-patient ward of the DWSH –GH. This is a cross-sectional descriptive study conducted from May to June 2006 at the DWSH-GH. The respondents are in-patient personnel, pregnant mothers who visit the maternity clinic but do not give birth at the hospital, and parturient mothers who give birth to their babies at the DWSH-GH. The samples are: 4 personnel which is a total sampling, 68 pregnant mothers taken by using quota sampling method, and 39 parturient mothers taken by using total sampling method from all population at the period of study. The result of the study showed that pregnant mothers who visit the maternity clinic but do not utilize the maternity in-patient ward give their opinion on the fulfillment of pregnant mothers’ rights; they also state their perception that the midwives at the in-patient ward are not capable enough to help in the process of giving birth, the service charges at the maternity in-patient ward is high, the maternity in-patient ward building is not in good condition, and the prescribed medicine cannot easily be obtained. Improvement into more sophisticated tools should be done on medical equipments, also a re-arrangement of the in-patient ward lay¬out and a renovation should be done on the in-patient ward, complete medicine should be available at the pharmacy, and patients’ relatives do not need to queue to get the medicine at the pharmacy.
