Abstract :
The roles of nursing manager in managing workers or other sources are important factors to produce professional and high quality nursing services. The manager should combine leadership and managerial skill to reach his/her aims. Chiefs of the wards as sub managers direct nursing services in the in-patient rooms and responsible for the quality of nursing services. As leaders, they hold important roles in mobilizing, monitoring and directing staff to improve nurses’ performance. This is a descriptive research done cross-sectional in September 2007 at the in-patient wards of Jember dr.Subandi General Hospital. Samples were taken randomly amounting to 114 respondents with 11 disqualified, thus only 103 respondents were accepted. The aim is to discover the correlation of Ward Chief’s giving direction and command and the performance of on-duty nurses at Jember Dr. Subandi General Hospital In-patient Wards in 2007. The result disclosed 62.1% of on-duty nurses were averaging 27.49 years old, 90.3% female and 48.5% were single/unmarried. But, 98.1% nurses had nursing diploma degree, 62.1 % had no training and work tenure ≤ 6 years (55.3%). From leadership point-of-view, the on-duty nurses stated that the ability of Ward Chief in giving direction and command was good (64.1 %).There was a correlation of Ward Chief’s giving direction and command and the performance of on-duty nurses based on the perception of on-duty nurses influenced by the age and gender of the nurses. The result of multivariate analysis presented dividing jobs (p- value= 0.017), responsibility and jobs under nursing care (p=0.206) were the most important components to nurses’ performance.
