Abstract :
A pterygium is a triangular-shape growth consisting of bulbar conjunctiva epithelium and hypertrophied subconjunctival connective tissue, occurring medially and laterally in the palpebral fissure and encroaching onto the cornea. The research was aimed to describe and explain the expression of p53 protein in progresive and non progresive type of pterygium by Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) type 18 infection. This research was an analytic obserbvational by cross sectional design, with 24 patients of pterygium since Febroary to October 2009 was classified into progressive and non progressive pterygium. The examining of PCR was used to detect positively infected by HPV type 18,was applied immunohistochemistry staining method to obserb and compare the expression of p53 on both types of pterygium. From our Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) examination, among 24 pterygium specimens , showed 21 (87.5%) were identified with HPV type 18 infection, of these, 19 samples (10 progressive and 9 non progressive pterygium) were further included in the study. Meanwhile 3 of those samples were excluded based on certain reasons. There were significant difference p53 expression between progressive and non progressive pterygium (mean 0.018995 vs 0.0041178, p = 0.007). This study concludes that the expression of p53 in a progressive pterygium was higher than non progressive pterygium. The progressivity of HPV type 18 infected pterygium was aggravated by increasing p53 expression.
