Abstract :

There has been a long debate on the relation of economic growth and povertyreduction. One of the most important issues in this regards is the question onthe significance of economic development as a mean to reduce poverty. Thispaper discusses the impact of economic growth on poverty level using thecase of Indonesia, particularly the required economic growth level in order toreduce poverty by fifty percent. Using provincial level historical data ofIndonesia from 1993 to 2000, this paper examines the required conditions inorder to reduce poverty in Indonesia by fifty percent by 2015. The result ofanalysis shows that Indonesia would need to achieve constantly 8 per centeconomic growth in order to halve the poverty rate by 2015.
