Abstract :
Background: Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) cytology is well accepted as a safe, reliable, minimal invasive and cost-effective method for diagnosis of salivary gland lesions. FNAB cytology aims to assist the clinician in the management of patients with salivary gland masses. Objective: To determine the diagnostic accuracy of FNAB in salivary gland lesions in period of1999-2003 and 2005-2009 at Dr. Soetomo hospital Surabaya. Material and Methods: The results of cytologic and histopathologic diagnoses of the patients with salivary gland tumor who admitted at Department of Surgery, Dr. Soetomo hospital were reviewed retrospectively. With the histopathologic diagnosis as gold standard, the diagnostic value of the FNAB cytologic diagnosis in periode of1999-2003 and 2005-2009 were determined and compared. Results: There were 78 cases and 95 cases of salivary gland tumor in periode of1999-2003 and 2005-2009 respectively reviewed. The sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of FNAB cytology diagnoses for salivary gland tumor in period of1999-2003 were 47.06%, 91.80%, 82.05%, 61.54%, 86.15% respectively; and in period of2005-2009 were 86,96%, 91,84%, 89,47%, 90,91%, 88,23% respectively. Conclusions: This study indicated that FNA cytology of salivary gland is a reliable and highly accurate diagnostic method for diagnosis of salivary gland lesions, and there was an increasing of the accuracy rate in period of2005-2009. It provides preoperative diagnosis for therapeutic management of patients with salivary gland tumor.
