Abstract :
Mastitis is bacterial infection of one or more lactating glands. Mastitis caused by ascending infection, trauma to the gland, or hematogenic spread and E. coli, Staphylococci and β-hemolytic Streptococci most commonly involved. In physical examination, we find firm, swollen, warm, and painfull mammary gland(s) from which purulent or hemorrhagic fluid can be expressed. Fever, dehydration, and septic shock can be found if patient has systemic involvement. Beside that, we can found abscessation or gangrene of gland(s). Analysis of milk is very helpful diagnostic method to determine the appropriate antibiotic for treatment of mastitis. If milk is acidic, use weak bases (erythromycin or lincomycin); if milk is alkaline, use weak acids (amoxicillin or cephalosporin). Chloramphenicol and enrofloxacin effective for both. There are several things that must be considered. If kittens continue to nurse, avoid tetracyclin, enrofloxacin and chloramphenicol. Chepalosporin, amoxicillin and amoxicillin with clavulanic acid can be used.
