Abstract :

Obesity was characterized by an expansion of adipose tissue leading to increased bodyweight above the optimal physiological weight. This study used cross sectional study design to determined the prevalence of obesity in dogs in Surabaya. Risk factors for obesity was also determined from the following variables : age, breed, gender including gonadectomy, feeding management including type of food and feeding frequency. The Body Condition Scoring (BCS) were assigned by use of a 5-point scale. A BCS of 1 was reported for thin, 2 for lean, 3 for optimal, 4 for overweight and 5 for obese. The prevalence of obesity in dogs in Surabaya was 9.09 %. The result shows that the breed of dogs which have obesity were mixed breed and pure breed include Miniature Pinscher, Dachshund, Chow-Chow, Greyhound and Golden Retriever. Medium breed dogs have 1.41 times greater risk to be obese than small and large breed, and purebred has 4.35 times greater to be obese than mixbreed dogs in Surabaya.
