Water quality and health complants from swimming pool users in sidoarjo

Abstract :

Purpose of this  research were  to identify  water  quality at Tirta Krida’s and  Sendang Delta sport  center’s swimming pool in Sidoarjo (physically,  chemically, and microbiology) and identify the health disorder  of swimmers. This was a descriptive research with cross sectional approach. Sample consists of the pool’s water (raw water, water after chlorination and after used) and the swimmers. The sample of the pool’s water was taken in order to observe coliform, pH, residual chlorine  and turbidity parameter during work day and holiday. The samples of swimmers were  taken  with random  technique. Result  of this study was the pool’s water quality at both locations didn’t meet the criteria (according to Peraturan  Menteri  Kesehatan RI No.  416/Menkes/Per/IX/1990), coliform,  pH and  residual  chlorine  parameters  at Sendang Delta sport center  didn’t meet the criteria, while at Tirta Krida, the smell and residual chlorine parameters didn’t meet the criteria either. There were  health disorders on swimmers in both places. The health disorder  that attacks  the swimmers was eyes and skin irritation, slip, and cramps. Swimming pool management was suggested to improve  the water management systems, use  disinfectant properly  and control  the water quality periodically.  The swimmers were suggested to use  personal equipment when  swimming to avoid health disorders after swimming.   Keywords: swimming pool, swimmer’s health disorder,  water quality
