Abstract :
Research for synthesis of calixarenes from eugenol using inorganic bases,such as NaOH and KOH, had been done. The objectives of the research were to know the result of calixarenes product from eugenol, the influence of different inorganic bases (NaOH and KOH) in synthesis product, and its application in separating homologous organic compounds based on its capability in host-guest interaction. The synthesis was done by reacting eugenol with formaldehyde and inorganic base solution. The synthesis product was characterized by infrared spectrophotometre and mass spectrometre in order to determine what kind of synthesis product it was. In this research, the synthesis product was not calixarenes, but a kind of methylenebisphenol, and it was 6-6’-methylenebis(4-allyl-2-methoxyphenol). Both of inorganic bases produced same products. The difference was only in the yield of products. The yield of synthesis using KOH was higher than NaOH.
