Abstract :

Pharmacists have a major role in self-medication, since most people take self-medication as the first step to treat illnesses. Patient satisfaction is one of the indicators to evaluate services.  The aim of this study was to measure pharmacy’s performance and clients’ importance level toward pharmaceutical services for self medication at Pharmacies in City of Gresik, East Java, Indonesia, using five variables of service quality (reliability, responsiveness, assurance, empathy, and tangibles). Cross sectional study was conducted in February to June 2009 by collecting data from 100 clients who did self medication at Pharmacies in City of Gresik, East Java, Indonesia. Questionnaire was tested for its validity and reliability. Data were analyzed by Importance and Performance Matrix. Results showed that no variables were perceived as important by patients with low level of performance. Whilst 13 (52 %) variables was important with high level of performance. Furthermore 9 (36 %) variables were not important with low level of performance. Lastly, 3 (12 %) variable was not important with high level of performance. In conclusion, there were variables to be improved. However, variables that were perceived as not important by patients does not necessarily mean not important in the view of healthcare professionals.
