Abstract :
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is often referred to as the great imitator. This is due to DM disease can cause organ damage as a whole is anatomically and functionally. One alternative treatment of diabetes mellitus is by using herbal therapy temu giring (Curcuma heyneana) rhizome extract. This study aimed to describe the ability of rhizome extract temu giring (Curcuma heyneana) in increasing SOD activity and improve pancreatic tissue damage of DM rats induced by MLD-STZ. In this study used an animal model of type I diabetic rats by giving Multiple Low-Dose Streptozotocin (MLD-STZ) dose of 20 mg/kgBW for 5 consecutive days. Temu giring extract as an alternative therapy is given to trial animals with varying doses of 1.25, 2.5 and 3.75 g/kgBW for 7 consecutive days. The results showed that rhizome extract therapy temu giring doses of 1.25, 2.5 and 3.75 g/kgBW in rats induced by MLD-STZ showed increased SOD activity in succession at 29.42%, 52.30% and 80.16%, and repair damage to pancreatic tissue. Maximum therapy in type 1 diabetic rats are shown in the temu giring extract dose 3.75 g/kgWB.
