Abstract :

One of the unique phenomena in marriage of Buginese Wajo community is mappasikarawa activity. This activity is not accepted as such but the truth of its positive effect has been tested in various life experiences both from oneself and others in the form of happiness, peace, safety, and welfare in household life. The aim of the study was to discover the system of Wajo community who has a traditional commitment to apply mappasikarawa activity in marriage and factors affecting the community to keep practicing the activity in marriage. The study used phenomenological qualitative by choosing the location in Wajo regency comprising Tempe, Majauleng, Belawa and Tanasitolo districts. The collection of data was done descriptively and qualitatively by observing, searching, studying, and analyzing local knowledge of Wajo community who has traditional commitment in the form of sennu’sennurang and gaukeng in mappasikarawa activity. The results of the study indicate that local knowledge of mappasikarawa in marriage activity for Wajo community is applied with different ways and techniques based on each version of pappasikarawa in each area. Wajo community remains exist in applying the local knowledge due to factors: arolang (patron client), significant others and generalis others, experience, beliefs from generation to generation values, and norms adopted by the community.
