Abstract :
prior to the economic crisis in Southeast and East Asian economies in the mid 1997, developmental state theory was applied to be one of the major discourses in explaining the high economic performance of the Newly Industrializing Countries (NICs) in Asia. It was also believed as being model that can be adopted by other developing countries. Since the economic crisis, however, the developmental state theory has been subject of criticism. Is it still relevance to the current discourse of development? These questions emerged after witnessing the fact that most of these countries adopted structural adjusment policy of overcoming the economic crisis, which means that, somehow, the state retreated its strongly involvement in economy. This paper argues that the problems is not merely on wether the developmental state is still relevance or not. In reality, the positon of state in economy is in continuum process, which implies that the development state remains ine of the discourses in economic development.
