Abstract :
Many studies show the state is one of the important factors that cause agrarian conflict. The question is how could we explain this? Analysts usually apply Marxist, Legal Pluralist, and Public Policy Theories to show how the state brings the agrarian conflict. Different of this tradition and based on a case study in one of the centers of large-scale palm oil plantation development in West Sumatera, this article wishes to proof that one of the theories that can be used to analyze the state as one of important causes in agrarian conflict is the Theory of State Formation. Based on this theory, agrarian conflict is viewed as the latent consequence of the ways in which the state expands its influence in a given society
