Abstract :
This article deals with life of poor female with specific characteristis, who are those from poor community of ‘tempe’ crafts in Surabaya Metropolitan. It was based on an empirical study that uses theory of phenomenology in examining a reality of poverty from females’ understanding of it. It also uses a gendered-perpective metdhology which is based its analysis on social construct of male-female relations, looking female’s ‘subjectivity’ aspect as a basis in every beggining of analysis about female’s life and put female’s specific life as the main focus of analysis. The whole research procedure uses qualitative method. The study finds that the meaning of poverty for poor female and male varies, stemming from those who see poverty as something that goes beyond human’s capacity to those who see poverty as a result of human’s attitude. Furhermore, for poor female, to work is not a choice but an obligation, an opinion that is based on their stock of konwledge saying that female have to work in order to support their family life. Moreover, for female dimensions of poverty are complex, which is different from the way male see it.
