Abstract :
Norbert Elias, a German philosopher-turned-into-sociologist, is a stranger in the Indonesiansociological forum. Meanwhile, Elias’ ideas influence many European well-known socialscientists in Indonesia. This article aims to fill the lack of Indonesian reading on Elias, so tointroduce Indonesian readers to Elias as one of important figures in the sociology. This article isnot going to explore all Elias’ ideas. This article limits the discussion on: the short biography ofNorbert Elias; the historical sociology of his sociological ideas; his idea of civilization andcivilizing process as the grounds of his sociology perspective.
