Abstract :
This paper discusses the relevance of the discourse or concept of the civil society in Indonesia by focusing on a basic question "What are the weaknesses and strengths of the using of civil society as a framework for analysis the Indonesian prospect of democracy?" This paper finds that the civil society is not compatible to the Indonesian collective experience. In concept, the civil society has its strengths as well as wekanesess. The use of the concept of civil society may be put not as a given historical product, but should be looked as a historical process.
