Abstract :
Hoarding is defined as the acquisition of, and inability to discard, items even though they appear (to others) to have no value. This behavior caused clutter in living and working space thus blocking the activity in which the space was originally intended, and there are significant distress in function due to hoarding behavior and the clutter. Compulsive hoarding (CH) is increasingly recognized as a public health burden and a threat to public health because it can cause the risk of fall, fire, unsanitary conditions and sanitation issues. In the DSM-IV-TR, hoarding is listed as one of the diagnostic criteria for obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and can be diagnosed either OCPD and OCD if it meets both criteria. However, CH often seems to be independent of other neurologic and psychiatric disorders. Therefore, the DSM-5 CH is recognized as a separate diagnostic entity and changed its name to Hoarding Disorder. The creation of the new diagnosis in DSM-5 would likely increase public awareness, improve identification of cases and stimulate both research and the development of specific treatments for hoarding disorder.
