Use patterns of antipsychotic-antiepileptic in psychosis epilepsy patients

Abstract :
Background: All antipsychotics reduce epileptogenic threshold and may cause epileptic seizures . This trend seems to vary between antipsychotics and dose -dependent. Purpose: Describing the use of antipsychotic and antiepileptic on psychotic of epilepsy of out-patients seeking treatment in psychiatric and neurology department on Dr.Soetomo Hospital in Surabaya. Method: This is a descriptive study. Data collected through the recording of medical records ( secondary data source ) out-patients seeking treatment in psychiatric dan neurology departement on July 1st, 2012 to December 31st, 2012 . The data obtained will be presented and analyzed in the form of descriptive statistics . Results: From tracking medical records of patients with psychotic epilepsy found the number of 59 patients . A total of 22 patients (37%) patients were aged between 26-35 years . Most of patients were male (59%) . Based on the results of EEG recordings showed 54 % of patients are temporal lobe epilepsy . The most widely used antiepileptic on epilepsy psychotic patients are valproic acid ( 41 % ) , and antipsychotics are the most widely used is that of haloperidol by 64 % . The combination of the two did not show a tendency toward a certain pattern .
