Abstract :
Special needs children generally could be defined as a child whom significantly having deviance during their growth, whether lack or abundance physically, mentally, emotionally, intelectually, and socially which differ them from normal children so that they need certain treatment and education. This research focusing on parents’ meaning towards themselves and the children, stigma addressed to the children and their families, and reaction developed by parents from stigma towards their children. Paradigm used in this research to solve the question is social definition with qualitative approach. Theories used was Herbert Blumer’s symbolic interactionism and Erving Goffman’s stigma. Interviewee in this research was seven mothers of special needs children all aroung Surabaya. Sampling technique used in this research was purpossive. Methods used collecting data was indepth interview. Result found in this research were: (1) Special needs children’s parents assumed themselves as someone who was in the middle of God’s trial and think of having those kids as part of fate; (2) Stigma addressed to special needs children familieswere both non-verbal and verbal, non-verbal one such as intense gaze whileverbal one was negative comments such as ”crazy” and ”abnormal”; (3) Reaction from the parents could be divide in two, radical and quiet ones. Radical reaction shown by the parents when thestigma was found too annoying for them.Keywords: special needs children, parents, meaning, interaction, stigma
