Abstract :
The hepatoprotective effect of Morinda citrifolia extract was investigated against paracetamol induced hepatic damage. Paracetamol at a dose of 400 mg/kg body weight produced liver damage in mice as manifested by the risemin serum level of Glutamate Oxaloacetate Transaminase (SGOT) and Glutamate Pyruvate Transaminase (SGPT) to 133.3  5.31 ï/L and 74.9  6.54 ï/L respectively, compared to respective control values of 76.3  9.18 ï/L and 35.2  4.57 ï/L.Pretreatment with Morinda citrifolia extract at dose 400 mg/kg BW but not at dose 100 mg/kg BW and dose 200 mg, significantly prevent paracetamol induced rise in SGOT and SGPT. Morinda citrifolia at dose 100/kg BW, 200 mg/kg BW and 400 mg BW inhibited rise SGOT was 130.7  8.37, 127.5  7.84 and 114  6.79 ï/L respectively and SGPT was 78.6  5.42, 66.9  9.78 and 59.3  9.76 ï/L respectivelyThe result suggest that the Morinda citrifolia extract possesses hepatoprotective activity is probably connected with its antioxidant activity
