Abstract :
This study describes the changes in China's position related to its participation in the international beauty contest. Since the commencement of the international beauty contest, in 1951, China never send representatives. However, in 1994, China had sent representatives despite being in the midst of controversy, and then does not send anymore. China absent for decades because China considers that the pageant is the oppression and exploitation of women, bourgeois product that caused a decadence for women. However, something different happens when entering the 2000s. China in the 2000s began to show his enthusiasm for the international beauty contest by sending back its representation in 2001. Not only send a representative, in 2003 China hosted The 53th Miss World contest. To find answers to these changes in China's position, researcher examined through two historical context by looking at China's conception of women as well as economic reforms. Related to China's conception of women, researcher reviewing it by a periodization, pre-1949, 1949 to 1976 when Mao Zedong hold the power and after the era of economic reforms in 1978. Based on that search, the study found that there is a shift in the conception of the role of women. Second, the economic reforms. Researcher examine how economic reform and then bring up the consequences for women and raises practical need for the integration of China. Broadly speaking, a shift in the conception as well as economic reform as the historical background makes China then participate in international beauty contests.
