Abstract :
This research explains about China’s influence in Gambia’s foreign policy change towards Taiwan. In 2013, Gambia severed diplomatic ties with Taiwan. That was the second time Gambia cut ties with Taiwan, after the first one in 1974, which was continued by the starting point of Gambia’s diplomatic relations with China. As a small country which has minimum natural resources and located in an enclave territory, Gambia has a big need of external support to raise its economy. While this can’t be provided by Taiwan cause the foreign aid model given by Taiwan is not suitable with democracy practice and needs in Gambia. However, in regional view, Gambia is surrounded with neighbor countries that have diplomatic relations with China and provided by big amount of foreign aid from China. By using power theory and big push theory, this research explains how Gambia would be able to take-off from the economic stagnation with the help of China’s economic power. Thus, Gambia needs to regain diplomatic relations with China.
