Abstract :

This research tries to explain the relationship between the football reform program and the Chinese economic policy of President Xi Jinping’s era, through the use of “political economy of sports” perspective. The Chinese football reform is linked to the concept of “Chinese Dream”, which emphasizes that the implementation of “Chinese Dream” of the nation’s revival is related to China’s dream to become a “sports powerhouse”. Xi Jinping sees football as a tool to advance prosperity, China’s collective efforts and national triumph. In the face of the slowing average annual growth of national GDP, it is important for the Chinese government to seek new, more sustainable growth areas, such as the sport industry. Through the use of literature studies and data analysis, the conclusions obtained in this study support the argument that Xi Jinping seeks to build a large and sustainable sports industry sector as an alternative in the face of China's national economic slowdown, by shaping China as a “sports powerhouse” through football reform program, based on the idea of “Chinese Dream” as a framework guide.
