Abstract :
Areca catechu is known in Indonesia as Pinang, contains alcaloids such as Arecoline, arecaine, arecaidine, arecolidine, guvacine, guvacoline and isoguvasine. Arecoline has ability to change gonad morfofunction, including shape abnormality of sperm. The aim of this research are to know the prospect of Aqoueus extract Betel Nut of Areca catechu as male antifertility agents based on its activity to induce apoptosis on testis connective cells of Rattus norvegicus. The animal models comprised 5 groups of 2-3 months male rats (Rattus norvegicus, Wistar strain), which induced for 1 week by variation of oral administration of Aqoueus extract Betel Nut of Areca catechu of 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 gram/200 gram body weight, namely T0, T1, T2, T3 and T4, respectively. Aposptosis of testis connective cells corfirmed by TUNEL technique. The result showed that Aqoueus extract Betel Nut of Areca catechu induced apoptosis of testis connective cells. It can be concluded that Aqoueus extract of Betel Nut of Areca catechu might be potential sources of natural and beneficial male antifertility agents based on its characters as an apoptosis agent .
