Abstract :

This research aims to see the effect of Japan's relative power declining on Japan's decision in the formation of China-Japan-Republic of Korea (CJK) FTA. The decline in Japan's relative power began to occur as Japan experienced a weakening of economic growth since the 1990s to the present day. Japan's position as the second largest economic power in the world overtaken by China in 2010. The launch of CJK FTA negotiations took place in 2012, along with escalation of conflict between China and Japan. Although the initiation of the formation of CJK FTA has occurred since 2002 but the talks related to the formation of CJK FTA ran slowly. The slow pace in the formation of CJK FTA came from Japan reluctant to forming CJK FTA. This paper links the relative power decline of Japan to institutional balancing strategies undertaken by Japan in the formation of CJK FTA. This study measures three things: the relative power decline of Japan, the level of economic interdependence, and the condition of power distribution between CJK.
