Abstract :
Until now China is still the world’s biggest producer of Rare Earth Elements (REE). China’s position in the REE industry becomes more important since the increase of adoption of modern high technology and swift change towards green economy. In 2014, China produced 93,000 tonnes out of total REE production of 110,000 tonnes worldwide. This makes China the biggest producer and a monopoly on the REE industry, but on the other side, other countries are becoming dependent on China’s REE production. Since the REE crisis in 2010, after the sea territorial dispute at Senkaku/Daiyou Island, East China Sea, the Chinese government halted REE exports to Japan. This led to global panic and dramatically increased price of REE. In addition, China’s action showed willingness to master and use its resources (REE) to fulfil its own national interest. In this research, we discuss further about how China turns REE industry into one of the leading sectors of its economy. This research uses Kondratieff Wave (K-Wave) to understand the leading sector shift and resources nationalism to analyse China’s effort to maximise profit from REE in economic and political aspects.
